Dalrymple Shire recorded average annual growth of 0.8% between 1996 and 2001, slightly below the average population growth recorded throughout the MITEZ Region.
The proportion of males in Dalrymple fell from 56.0% to 54.2% between 1996 and 2001.
The average age of Dalrymple residents increased by 2.1 years between 1996 and 2001 to 35.5 years almost in line with the State average. There was significant age redistribution in Dalrymple over the period with a large increase in persons aged older than 40 years.
In terms of ethnicity, 85.8% of residents were born in Australia in 2001, down from 89.0% in 1996. Over the same period, the proportion of persons who speak a language other than English also fell by 0.2 points to 0.9%.
Around 58.8% of persons aged over 15 years in Dalrymple were married in 2001, a 0.5 point reduction from 1996.
The proportion of persons nominating Christian as their religious denomination fell by 3.1 points to 71.5%, in line with State trends.
The average weekly income in Dalrymple grew by 29.0% to $472. This growth significantly exceeded State growth over the same period.
The dominance of agriculture is clear in Dalrymple, with the sector accounting for almost 34% of total employment in 2001. Mining is the next most significant employer (13.2% of total employment). Interestingly, retail trade does not account for the same proportion of employment as is evident with other MITEZ LGAs.
Overall, Dalrymple Shire recorded an unemployment rate of 4.3% in 2001, down from 7.4% in 1996. Around 21.9% of the workforce has a qualification of some description.
