Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data reports that in 2007 there were 486,386 guest arrivals in the MITEZ region, spending over one million (1,053,425) nights. In comparison to 2006, both guest arrivals and nights declined, by 2.0% and 1.4%, respectively. At the LGA level, both Cloncurry and Townsville recorded increases of 3.4% each in guest arrivals, with Cloncurry estimated to have a 25.5% increase in guest nights stayed.

Whilst overall guest arrivals, guest nights, and room nights declined, occupancy rate were 2.2 percentage points higher in 2007 than 2006. Additionally, the average stay increased by 0.2 days to 2.1 days over the same period. As a result increased overall takings grew 6.1% to $79.2 million in 2007.

Meanwhile, total domestic airport passenger movements in 2007 increased 6.1% in 2007 from the previous year to 1.4 million passengers, with both arrivals (6.4%) and departures (5.9%) reporting increases. The strong growth in passenger movements through the Townsville airport demonstrates solid market demand for air travel, driven by strong population and economic growth in the LGA.

Future visitation and tourism in Townsville and the MITEZ region is expected to continue to grow as the region continues to record strong economic and population growth and its reputation improves as a holiday destination.
