Dalrymple Shire
Subsequent to discovery expeditions by Ludwig Leichhardt in 1845-6 and George Elphinstone Dalrymple in 1859 the Dalrymple local authority was established in 1879 and, at that time, encompassed 26300 square miles.
In 1936 it graduated from the status of Divisional Board to Shire Council.
Dalrymple Shire Council is still one of the largest local government areas in Queensland (the area having increased slightly as a result of boundary reviews), and is as diverse as it is vast.
Council acknowledges humbly the debt owed to the pioneers, prospectors and pastoralists who, all together, contributed their time, knowledge, hopes and aspirations towards the development and progress of this community, which is still primarily sustained by grazing and mining activities.
Even now the successful government of this area, by Council, is challenged by the difficulties of providing infrastructure to communities which are hundreds of kilometres apart, over country which is constantly threatened by flood and drought.
The overwhelming technological and societal changes seen since 1879 have meant that people are much less isolated from each other, community services and their Council. As a natural consequence, the Dalrymple Shire Council is constantly challenged to adapt to meet these changes.
Council aims to meet its challenges by identifying the need for action, and fully committing itself to addressing that need, to the limit of its resources.
