Flinders Shire
Hughenden, the social and economic hub of the Mid West,
is the centrepiece of Flinders Shire. One of four National Parks,
the spectacular Porcupine Gorge, often referred to as Australia's
'little Grand Canyon', boasts breathtaking views from lookouts
and access into the gorge from the Pyramid camping ground.
The Flinders River, Queensland's longest river, kisses Hughenden
on its way to the Gulf of Carpentaria, providing extensive
park and recreational areas along its banks. Features unique
to the Shire are showcased through displays of public art,
celebrating the history and culture that promote the innovation
of our residents.
Flinders Shire takes advantage of it strategic location
at the crossroads of the Flinders Highway and Kennedy
Developmental Road. Straddling the major transport and
tourism routes, east-west and north-south, provides immediate
access to national and international markets. Cattle graze
the basalt country north of the Flinders River, with the
black soil downs country to the south proving suitable
grazing land for sheep and cattle. The dry tropical climate,
atmosphere of the outback and diversification of industry all
combine to ensure Flinders Shire residents enjoy quality of life.
Through recognition of local history and initiatives
driven by an active community, Flinders Shire is implementing
a sustainable future.
