Thuringowa is North Queensland’s fastest growing city. It boasts a laid-back lifestyle envied by many throughout Australia.
Thuringowa is located adjacent to Townsville. The regional population of the twin cities is now 150,000 with Thuringowa City Council servicing the needs of 56,000 residents.
The Council prides itself on being a city of life and growth. It is also a city with a young population. Over 40 per cent of the population is aged under 24.
On behalf of the city’s residents, Thuringowa Mayor Les Tyrell recently accepted the award of North Queensland’s Friendliest Town for 2003 as part of the annual Queensland Tidy Town Awards.
Thousands of Defence Force personnel live in Thuringowa and the city is also the base for QNI Resources Pty Ltd nickel refinery and the future Transfield Power Station at Yabulu.
Thuringowa’s landscape features beaches, rivers and rainforests, all providing visitors with a diverse range of experiences. The northern beaches region comprises five magnificent beaches with kilometres of white, sandy stretches for sun lovers to enjoy.
Unique to Thuringowa is the cool, mountain retreat of Paluma. The tiny village is nestled in a cool, tropical rainforest which is the perfect backdrop for a family picnic.
The Ross River meanders through the western suburbs and is popular for a multitude of leisure pursuits. Every July, the river bank comes alive with the Council’s premier event, the Thuringowa River Festival.
Work is set to commence next year on Stage 1 of Council’s Riverway project. It is one of the city’s most ambitious projects which will see 11km of the river transformed into a world-class facility catering to the city’s sporting, cultural and recreational needs.
Thuringowa Central Library and Pinnacles Gallery are located at the Council chambers on Thuringowa Drive.
The library offers a large collection of reading material as well as music CDs, videos, internet facilities and a mobile library service. The gallery provides a diversity of art, social history and educational exhibitions, both local and touring, which focus on the North Queensland community.
Thuringowa is home to Dairy Farmers Stadium and the National Rugby League team, the North Queensland Cowboys. There are two world-class golf courses located at the Willows and Mystic Sands in the Northern Beaches area.
Residents enjoy spending time outdoors and Council has dedicated major resources into the city’s parks and gardens. There are also many caravan parks and rest areas for visitors to the region.
With over 300 days of sunshine per year, Thuringowa is a tropical paradise perfect for business or pleasure.
