The MITEZ Region

The MITEZ region comprises of seven Local Government Areas (LGA￿s) in Northern and North-West Queensland as shown buy the map below. The LGA￿s are Mount Isa City, Cloncurry Shire, McKinlay Shire, Richmond Shire, Flinders Shire, Charters Towers Regional Council, and Townsville City.

Townsville and Mount Isa are the major centres in the region, while minor centres include Cloncurry (Cloncurry Shire), Julia Creek (McKinlay Shire), Richmond (Richmond Shire), Hughenden (Flinders Shire), Pentland (Charters Towers Regional) and Charters Towers (Charters Towers Regional).

The MITEZ region covers an area of 271,732 square kilometres, representing approximately 16% of the area of Queensland.

There were 205,416 persons residing in the MITEZ region in 2006, an increase of 19,103 persons since 2001, equating to an average annual growth rate of 1.4%.

Looking ahead, the MITEZ Region￿s population is projected by the Queensland Government￿s Population and Information Forecasting Unit to reach 238,256 persons by 2016, growing at an average rate of 1.5% per annum. The strongest growth is forecast for Townsville (1.8% pa), followed by Cloncurry (0.3% pa) and Mount Isa (0.2% pa).
