The region extends from the Great Barrier Reef, over the Great Dividing Range, through the serene historical outback to the Queensland-Northern Territory border, covering a <strong>total land area of 271,732 square kilometres</strong>.</P> <P> The MITEZ Region is currently (2008) <strong>home to over 216,500 persons</strong> with an average annual rate of 2.5 per cent since 2003. Townsville is the largest centre in the region with just under 170,000 residents in 2007, followed by Mount Isa (just over 21,000) and Charters Towers (just over 12,000).</P> <P> Townsville, the largest centre in Northern Australia, is situated on the sunny North Queensland coast, whilst Charters Towers and Mount Isa are approximately 110 and 890 kilometres inland respectively.</P> <P>Linking the economies of the MITEZ region are major contributions from base metal mining, agriculture, mineral processing and manufacturing. These key industries are economically synergistic in their relationship, with Townsville and Mount Isa industry interlinked and crucial to each other&rsquo;s future economic growth. </P> <P>In addition to these core industries, the MITEZ Region offers an <strong>abundance of suitable land </strong>in close proximity to one of Queensland&rsquo;s largest ports, a <strong>dependable supply of water, power and integrated transport corridors</strong> to the rest of Queensland, Australia and the World.</P> <img src="images/map_region.jpg" width="610" height="408" alt="Map showing location of the MITEZ region."> <h2>Weather</h2> <P> The MITEZ Region enjoys a <strong>warm, sunny climate</strong> with moderate seasonal changes in climatic conditions. The climate is very dry for eight months of the year with average temperatures in the mid to high 20s Celsius. The region experiences on average 320 days of sunshine each year with more than eight hours of sunshine each day, making conditions <strong>favourable to an outdoor lifestyle</strong>.</P> <h2>Population growth &amp; change</h2> <P><img src="images/cloncurry_ariel.jpg" alt="Cloncurry" width="300" height="200" hspace="5" border="1" align="right">The population of the MITEZ region reached 216,787 persons in 2008, accounting for 5 per cent of the population of Queensland. </P> <P>The region has been growing solidly since 2003 at an average annual rate of 2.5 per cent. The population of the MITEZ region is forecast by the Queensland Population and Information Forecasting Unit (PIFU) to reach 241,723 persons by 2011 and 277,156 by 2016 representing an increase of 35,433 persons between 2006 and 2016.</P> <h2> Age</h2> <P><img src="images/mining_girl.jpg" alt="Girl driving truck" width="300" height="199" hspace="5" border="1" align="right">The average age of MITEZ residents is 34 years, 2 years younger than the state average. Persons aged between 0 and 14 years accounted for 21.7 per cent of the MITEZ population with a further 22.9 per cent between 45 and 64 years. </P> <P>Persons aged 65 years and over constitute 9.1 per cent of the MITEZ population, whilst those aged between 15 and 24 years account for 16.4 per cent and the remaining 30.1 per cent are aged between 25 and 44 years.</P> <h2>Household income</h2> <P>In 2008-09, persons within the MITEZ region enjoyed an average income of $1,363.74 per week, higher than the Queensland average of $1,136.70 per week.
