Our Region

Cloncurry

A rural town with rich mining and pastoral industries, Cloncurry lies 400 kilometres south of the Gulf of Carpentaria and forms a strategic location within the North West Minerals Province.

North Western Queensland

Cloncurry

On the banks of the Cloncurry River, 700 kilometres west of Townsville and 120 kilometres east of Mount Isa, Cloncurry lies in the heart of one of the world’s richest mineral-producing regions.

Covering a land area of almost 48,000 square kilometres, Cloncurry acts as a regional centre that provides a range of essential medical, health, hospital, education, community and family services to the approximately 3,200 people who call the area home.

Already a significant contributor to mining efforts in the region, industry changes and the expansion of new mineral sectors have seen Cloncurry benefit from unprecedented mining sector growth. Its established pastoral industry and strategic investments in the region’s transport infrastructure mean that Cloncurry is a prime candidate for leading the economic development of Queensland’s North West.

Thanks to its mining industry and the related infrastructure, Cloncurry Shire has easy access to transport routes that connect it to Brisbane, Sydney, Darwin and beyond. Major investments in road, rail and air transport allow Cloncurry to form a key link in the MITEZ transport corridor, joining Mount Isa’s mining regions with the rest of Australia. Building on those strengths, future projects for the region include new mines in gold, copper, zinc and rare earth elements, as well as the transport and processing of those minerals for other markets.
